Great Cape Town restaurants to try out on your next visit

It’s no secret that some of the best restaurants in South Africa are to be found in Cape Town – in fact, it’s the reason for many people’s holidays or weekend breaks.

For a lot of local travellers, who have seen most of the Cape Town tourist sites before, an excuse to spend a weekend in the Mother City is the ideal time to book into one of the cities’ trendy Cape Town restaurants and have a food experience of a lifetime.

While the good Cape Town restaurants can be expensive, especially when your food is paired with fantastic locally produced wine, it doesn’t mean you have to take out an extra bond to finance your foodie trip. Here are six really interesting spots to visit, so sit back and read on, try not to drool too much.

Six of the Best Cape Town Restaurants to try:

Royale Eatery, Long Street, City Bowl

For a lively evening of great food and great beer, you can’t go wrong with Royale. Eclectic décor dominates in this very popular spot, with balconies overlooking Long Street. The burger choice is wide – from Classics, like Miss Piggy (bacon and guacamole) to something different, like the Sprinter (ostrich burger, rocket, Danish feta, homemade tomato and onion jam). Their range also includes chicken, fish, vegetarian and vegan burgers. Oh, and the Jack Daniels and Peanut Butter milkshakes are to die for…

The Test Kitchen - Great Cape Town restaurants
The Test Kitchen and The Pot Luck Club, The Old Biscuit Mill, Woodstock

An industrial space with an open plan kitchen, the ever-changing eight (or more) course tasting menus are aimed at surprising and delighting guests. A real adventure in taste, this doesn’t come cheap, but is worth saving up for. With a two month waiting list, you’ll need to book well ahead. The Pot Luck Club, just upstairs, offers a tapas dining experience, guaranteed to get you talking and sharing the exotic tastes.

Woodlands Eatery, Vredehoek

Best known for its imaginative pizzas - think lamb and crème fraiche - there’s something on the menu for everyone. Owner-run and managed, this popular bistro is busy and quirky. Tasty vegetarian options too.

The Food Barn, Noordhoek

Delicious and decadent food served in a character-filled old barn, this Cape restaurant is worth the drive over the mountain. Serving freshly baked breads and fabulous coffee, the deli turns into a tapas bar at night, with a Pop Up kitchen every Wednesday.

Cape town restaurants - a different lunch experience
Green House at Babylonstoren, near Franschhoek

A bit out of town, but worth the trip. With most of the ingredients plucked straight from the gardens, the food at the Green House gives you a different lunch experience, at quite affordable prices. The walk through this amazing farm to the restaurant gives you some insight into the freshness and variety of fare and is well worth exploring after your meal.
